Delhi’s weather always calls for extremity. Whether it be winters or summers, it always has to be at its peak in the capital of the country. As the capital’s weather is approaching intense summer heat, one needs to be aware. Every year Delhi sees yellow alerts due to intense heatwaves. It raises serious concerns as many people do not have access to air conditioned places for work or living and many have to travel without AC vehicles. While we can’t control the weather, we can take proactive measures to safeguard our health and well-being. Here are some tips to beat the heat and stay healthy in the face of Delhi’s scorching temperatures.

1.Apply sunscreen– Sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin from harmful UV radiation which can lead to sunburn, premature aging and skin cancer. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher and apply it generously to all exposed skin at least 15 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or more frequently if you’re sweating or swimming.

2.Stay Hydrated with Hydrating Foods– In addition to drinking plenty of water, you can also stay hydrated by consuming foods with high water content such as fruits and vegetables. Avoid sugary or caffeinated beverages as they can contribute to dehydration. 

Here are some healthy options to stay hydrated and boost your immunity at the same time.

  • Beetroot juice– It is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that support a healthy immune system, helping to protect against summer colds, allergies and other seasonal illnesses.
  • Watermelon juice– It has a naturally sweet and refreshing taste, making it a delicious way
    to cool down and quench thirst on hot summer days.
  • Coconut water– It is low in calories and naturally contains less sugar than many other sweetened beverages, making it a healthier option for staying hydrated without consuming excess calories or sugar.
  • Golden milk- Turmeric milk– While turmeric milk is commonly associated with cold weather and winter months, it contains a compound called curcumin which has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation can occur in the body due to various factors including exposure to UV radiation from the sun. Drinking turmeric milk can help reduce inflammation and soothe sunburn or other inflammatory conditions common in summer.

3.Cover Up: Wear lightweight, breathable clothing that covers your skin which can provide protection from the sun’s harmful rays and help prevent sunburn and heat-related illnesses. Choose loose-fitting garments made from light-colored, moisture-wicking fabrics like cotton or linen and don’t forget to wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for added protection.

4. Plan Commute Wisely: If you have to commute or spend time outdoors during the hottest part of the day, try to minimize sun exposure. Plan your activities such as gardening or exercise for early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. If possible, use shaded routes, public transportation or carpool to reduce direct exposure to the sun’s rays. Whenever possible seek shade or create your own shade using umbrellas or portable canopies to reduce direct sun exposure.

5.Take Breaks: If you are working or exercising outdoors, take regular breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas to rest, cool down and rehydrate. Listen to your body’s signals and pay attention to signs of heat-related illnesses like dizziness, nausea or fatigue. If needed, take immediate action to prevent further heat exposure.

6.Know the Signs of HeatRelated Illness– Educate yourself and others about the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Know what to do if someone experiences these conditions. Seek medical attention immediately if you or someone else shows signs of severe dehydration or heatstroke including high body temperature, rapid pulse, confusion or loss of consciousness.

Remember that it is important not to stress yourself out. Instead, embrace the weather and gracefully accept the circumstances. We are fortunate to bask in the warmth of the sun, unlike those enduring long stretches without sunlight in extreme cold conditions. Take good care of yourselves and perhaps consider taking a well-deserved vacation to fully enjoy the season.
