Kozhikode, India’s First UNESCO City of Literature

Kozhikode, also known as Calicut, is a city in the southern Indian state of Kerala. It is known for its historical significance, cultural heritage, cuisine, and natural beauty. The prestigious educational institute, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), is located in Kozhikode.

Recently, the city has been in the news for a significant reason: it became the first UNESCO City of Literature in India on June 23, 2024.

In comparison with London

Minister for Local Self-Government M.B. Rajesh made the announcement and added that “Kozhikode is to Kerala what London was to talents across the world.” He beautifully described the city with the following adjectives:

  • Unpretentious
  • Hospitable,
  • with an undying spirit of freedom

Appreciation and credits

He also appreciates two Jnanpith winners and also appreciates cinema, music and media houses from Kozhikode for their wonderful contribution in earning the cuty this prestigious status. He also appreciated the initiative taken by the Mayor and the Kerala Institute of Local Administration to make it happen.                         ”We could present the achievements of Kozhikode more effectively through proper planning and preparation,” he said.

What does the title mean?

The UNESCO City of Literature is a designation given by UNESCO to cities with a rich literary heritage and actively promotes the development of literature and reading. This designation is part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, launched in 2004 to promote cooperation among cities that recognize creativity as a strategic factor in sustainable urban development.

To be designated to earn the title, the city must demonstrate the following-

  • A diverse punishing industry
  • Programs promoting and focussing on literature
  • Facilitate public libraries, nook stores and cultural centres dedicated to literature
  • A literary community with regular literary events and festivals
  • A literary community with regular literary events and festivals

The first city to attain this title is Edinburgh, followed by Melbourne, Iowa City, Dublin, Reykjavík, and Prague.

Annual city of literature day

Mayor M. Beena Philip announced that June 23 will be celebrated annually as “City of Literature Day.”
Anakkulam Cultural Centre will become the “City of Literature centre”
Activities and events to promote literature which will be done every year might include the following-

  • Annual cultural festival
  • Public art and exhibition
  • Library events
  • Literary festivals
  • School events
  • Seminars and workshops

Literary Awards

Every year, the following awards will be given in the six categories during the annual cultural festival –

  1. Comprehensive contribution
  2. Women writers
  3. Young writers
  4. Children’s Literature
  5. Translations from Malayalam to other languages
  6. Translations from other languages to Malayalam

Conclusion

The designation given to Kozhikode sets an example for the other states of the country. Although the designation might be given to a state, it is a proud moment for the country and its citizens.
