Delhi University’s Bold Move: Reserving Seats for Single Girl Children

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao is a wonderful initiative by the Government of India. Taking it a step ahead, to ensure that girl children equally strive and thrive in our country, the University of Delhi has introduced and implemented a single girl child quota. DU Registrar Vikas Gupta has confirmed the newly introduced reservation for single girl children in all programs as part of the supernumerary seats. The reservation is for an only-girl child, which means the child must be the only child of the parents, with no male or female siblings.

What are supernumerary seats ?

Supernumerary seats are additional seats created in educational institutions or other organizations, typically over and above the regular intake capacity. The aim of these seats is to provide increased opportunities to specific groups without decreasing the current number of seats. The reservation for single girl children has been introduced under this category to encourage families to educate their girl children.

How many seats are there for girl children under the reservation?

The university has close to 71,000 seats in 79 undergraduate (UG) programs and 183 BA program combinations spread across 69 colleges and departments. One seat is reserved in each course in every college of Delhi University starting from the session 2024-25.

How to apply for this category?

In the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) portal, there will be an option to select the single girl child option. The process after that remains the same. The candidates will have to submit the documents, and the most eligible will get the seat under the reservation. The admission for undergraduate courses will take place in two phases, with the first phase having already begun, and the second phase will begin after the CUET results. The admissions process for the School of Open Learning (SOL) will commence on June 4, 2024, and will be based on the marks obtained in the Class 12 board examinations.

Why is this initiative praiseworthy?

For many families, this initiative brings a ray of hope. For a single girl child, it can be a lifechanging initiative. Knowing that a seat is reserved for them, and with their hard work and determination, they can benefit, bringing confidence to achieve great heights. It has been said that educating a girl implies educating a whole family. Educating girls signifies empowering girls, which is definitely going to contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.

Everyone should be aware of their  rights and especially should be aware to fight for their rights, and this knowledge can only be achieved through education. Thus, by promoting the education of single girl children, DU is not just supporting individual students but also investing in the future of the nation.
