Maharashtra Govt Mandates Mother’s Name on Documents

The Maharashtra cabinet has made it mandatory to include the name of the mother in all government documents. However it is applicable only for the individuals born on or after May 1, 2024. It includes registration on the documents including school certificates, board exam certificates and salary slips. Maharashtra is also in talks with the centre to include the mother’s name in birth and death certificates.

Delhi Court: Mother’s Name on Official Papers

The Delhi High Court has also taken a step ahead by ordering Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University to include mother’s name in student’s degree and other educational documents.

However, married women will still have their husbands’ names on the documents. Maharashtra’s CM Eknath Shinde says ”Mothers have the lion’s share in bringing up children, and the state government has taken a historic decision to give them due credit.”

Kudos to such an impressive decision that leaves a positive impact on society. A child will no longer be recognized solely by the father’s name, instead the mother will play equally an important role. One step at a time, but these kinds of orders are genuinely impactful and need to be applicable not only in certain states but nationwide.
